In IT certification, what youre going to get is some immediate bang for your buck in terms of salary increase, said Amit Yoran, CEO of information security provider Riptech and adjunct professor at George Washington University. However, Yoran still stresses the importance of having a college degree to accompany the certification.

Doug Kendzierski, associate vice provost at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), said, Were in a market in which demand has never outpaced supply by such a tremendous disparity. If you want to cash in on the increasing concern over network security, the SANS GIAC (System Administration, Networking, and Security Global Incident Analysis Center) certificate will show potential employers that you can protect the corporate goodies. To gain even more leverage, combine this vendor-neutral security certification with a vendor-specific one. Almost every firewall-equipment vendor has its own certification program, and a generic security certification combined with a CCSE (Check Point Certified Security Engineer) or a Cisco Security Specialist certificate would make for a quick path to employment.

Introduction

1. Decide on a certification.This may sound obvious, but there are a lot of people who are not sure which certs are respected in their chosen industry. Good resources for this are peers, managers, and if you’re still unsure, try posting your thoughts and questions in our website. 2. Evaluate your experience.Once you know what certification you are going to pursue, you must take a realistic look at how much experience you have with the material and decide what type of study or training is needed. Research the certification requirements to find out what is expected. For example, CompTIA’s A+ suggests that you have 6 months of experience as a technician, while an upper-level cert such as the PMP requires 5-10 years of experience.
3. Study and train.If you are an expert in your field, with the experience and knowledge to dive directly into the exams, a good exam preparation book will be the best way for you to study.
   If you are new to the subject, or need some hands-on experience, you will benefit greatly from online or classroom training. In both cases, some good practice questions are definitely worth the money to ensure you pass your exams.
4. Register for your exam.The final step is the simplest. Most certification vendors allow you to register through either Prometric or Pearson Vue. There are also a few that require that you register directly through the vendor.

Don’t Believe the Hype

As a person who has grown up addicted to a keyboard and mouse, I tread a fine line between computer enthusiast and IT specialist. I enjoy the occasional call to a local business in “dire” need of assistance or the house call from the “friend’s-brother’s-nephew” who (according to my friend’s brother at least) has “messed up or fried the CPU.” These are all fine and well; they allow me to practice my hobby in an enjoyable and profitable way. When computing ceases to be a hobby and begins to be a mundane chore, I cut back on work a bit and try to enjoy myself again. It is my belief that to be successful in “information technology,” or whichever buzzword you choose to employ, you must be able to take pleasure in the troubleshooting process, keep a level head, and never allow yourself to be caught up in the world of industry jargon and empty rhetoric. Nevertheless, earning a certification or engaging in coursework in the IT field can be a rewarding experience if you keep a level head and seek to learn.

A Secret about Comptia Network+

In my own pursuit of Network+ certification, I first began with a simple interest in the certification. I was looking for a summer job but was unable to really provide a reasonable list of qualifications, other than “many years of experience working with computers.” For some reason, employers seemed to take my “qualifications” at face value. So, I felt that it would be necessary for me to attain some kind of universally recognizable certification in the IT field so that I could at least begin a career as a PC technician. The CompTIA A+ and Network+ certifications seemed to be most relevant; after all, they cover the basic fields of on-site troubleshooting: PC hardware/software and networking. And, as I was seeking a quick job at the time, it didn’t hurt to know that A+ and Network+ are totally vendor-neutral and universally recognized. Now, I will let you in on a secret of sorts. For this exam, as for virtually any other IT-related certification exam, it is ”not a requirement” to enroll in a costly course or to purchase time with an expensive trainer to pass the examination. While a course can certainly ease your path to certification, the knowledge required to pass and even excel in the Comptia Network+ exam can be attained through experience as an IT professional. The examination tests you on what is truly important - the experience that is derived from hands-on field training.

TBILISI, Sept. 2 (Xinhua) — Georgia formally cut diplomatic ties with Russia on Tuesday in protest against Moscow’s recognition of the independence of two breakaway Georgian regions, and welcomed the decisions of an emergency EU summit on its conflict with Russia.

The Georgian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that it summoned Russia’s envoy in Georgia, Andrei Smaga, and handed him a note informing Moscow of Tbilisi’s decision to terminate diplomatic relations in light of “Russia’s hostile actions.”

Georgia will maintain consular relations with Russia, the ministry said.

Under the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations, breaking off diplomatic ties does not automatically lead to a cut in consular relations.
