70-271 Study Tip - What is a dynamic disk?
Saturday, September 13th, 2008A dynamic disk is a physical disk, which supports volumes that span multiple disks such as striped volume, RAID-5 volume, etc. A dynamic disk uses a hidden database to track information about dynamic volumes on the disk and other dynamic disks in the computer. Dynamic disks can be made by converting the basic disks. This can be done by using Disk Management or the DISKPART command-line utility. When a basic disk is converted into a dynamic disk, all existing basic volumes become dynamic volumes.
Limitations in moving dynamic disks Dynamic disks facilitate users in moving dynamic volumes from one computer to another computer.
The following are the limitations in moving dynamic disks to another computer:
Dynamic disks cannot be moved onto computers running Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows Me, Windows NT 4.0 or earlier, or Windows XP Home Edition.
If a spanned or a striped volume is moved to another computer partially, none of the data on the entire volume will be accessible. Therefore, all disks associated with a spanned or striped volume must be moved together.
